My LS400 is making a moaning noise at low speed when the car is warmed up and I turn the front wheels. So far as I can tell it goes away at highway speed. The steering fluid is at the correct level and it is definitely not leaking anything. The steering doesn't feel any different compared to before the car started making the noise. I'm betting on a bad pump but I realistically have no idea. Whelp

on those, if at any point the p/s pump was run low in fluid, they would get suuuper hot. Those pumps are rotary vane type pumps and when ran dry or near dry it would cause the little square impellers to wear out. Although with fresh fluid it may quite down, let it warm up and have someone turn the wheel while you listen to it with a long extension or long screw driver placed on the pump like a stethoscope. Although the pump is dry, leaks on those usually were from the 2 skinny lines on the rack near the input shaft

I've looked all over the engine bay, and put pads under the car and let it run. It isn't leaking any fluid and is staying at the same level every day. Do you think a fluid change would fix the problems? If not, are impellers something that can be replaced instead of the whole pump or is a full pump job ?

finding the source of the noise is first.

If is the pump, it was more than likely running with little to no fluid at one point in the past. People hardly ever check their p/s fluid. Can’t be repaired, must be replaced if indeed that is where the noise is coming from. Make sure to check all pullies, alternator, a/c, etc. Is you don’t have an automotive stethoscope, use a long screwdriver or 3/8ths extension listen to those things cold, hot, and under a load
